Social Distancing. I'm trying to remember if those are two words we ever put together in a sentence before these past few weeks. I don't think so, but now they are part of our vocabulary.
E.B. White said it best: “I would rather feel bad in Maine than feel good anywhere else”.
Tommy and I have been working from home for the past few days, which we do frequently anyway, but now it feels different. Not bad, just different.
We moved to Lincolnville to get away from the noise and crowds in the Hamptons. I am an introvert, believe it or not, and I need to tune out and shut down at the end of the day and there is no better place in the world to tune out than Lincolnville, in my opinion. Actually, I take that back, our cottage in Hope is even better for recharging, but it's not heated, so we are just there in the summer. True story: When we bought our cottage on Hobbs Pond in Hope we told all of our friends back in New York that we bought a camp, because that's what you call a lake house here. They all thought we'd lost our minds because a camp back in New York is where you send your kids for the summer, where they do arts and crafts, horseback riding, tennis, make s'mores, and sing around the campfire. Ah, no. In Maine, a camp is a Mainer's summer house. Which cracked our friends up even more because they couldn't figure out why we needed a getaway to get away from our getaway.
So anyway, here we are, socially distancing ourselves from the rest of society, feeling much the same as we did before the world turned on its ear, but all the while knowing that nothing is the same.
We wish you all peace and strength during this very strange time. At the end of it we hope that the world is a kinder and gentler place for us all.
